21 June 2019 was celebrated as International Day of Yoga across the world with great enthusiasm. Public parks, community halls and other places alike witnesds groups of people gathered to practice Yoga. Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, presented the idea of a Yoga Day. Garnering huge support from Yoga practitioners worldwide, in 2015, the United Nations declared 21 June to be observed as the International Day of Yoga.

To celebrate the 5th International Day of Yoga, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) held Yoga workshops across its central and state offices to raise awareness about the importance of this Vedic Indian tradition.

The Sanskrit word “Yoga” comes from the word “yuj” which means, “to unite.” Yoga refers to the union of the individual with the larger universe and existence. Yoga is a highly detailed and fine art, which can be learned with practice and requires years of patience and dedication.

The workshop organised on Friday, 21 June 2019 in CII Central Office, Lodi Road, was conducted by Isha Foundation. A guided set of Upa Yoga asanas was shown and practiced. Upa Yoga essentially means “sub-yoga” or “pre-yoga”. The Upa Yoga offers a simple yet powerful set of practices including Yoga Namaskar and Nadi Shuddhi that activate the joints, muscles and energy system, bringing ease to the whole system.  Simple exercises of relaxing the neck and shoulder muscles were also conducted, in a cycle. The session was very well received by the participants.

Northern Region

“Aqua yoga”, practiced in CII Northern Region, is a unique type of Yoga in which asanas are in performed in water. Adapting the postures and principals of Yoga – including breathing and mindfulness – to an aquatic environment catches the attention of people and is a fun way to participate in and celebrate Yoga Day.

Shri V. Srinivas Goud, Hon’ble Minister for Prohibition & Excise, Sports & Youth Services, Tourism & Culture and Archaeology, Government of Telangana participated in the CII Southern Region Yoga Session in Hyderabad.

Southern Region

Western Region

To promote health and ellbeing along with work life, CII Gujarat in association with Indian Women Network & Young Indians hosted a Corporate Yoga Session. All participants performed Chair-Yoga, which focused on spinal, eye & breathing exercises, along with meditation. CII Rajkot in association VVP Engineering College observed Yoga Day at VVP college premises with presence of over 100 participants including VVP college faculty, industry members and people from various businesses.

Eastern and North Eastern Region

CII Eastern Region held Yoga workshops across its offices and at various indoor and outdoor venues. CII and Young Indian members participated in the International Yoga Day celebrations at Raj Bhawan, Guwahati as well.

GBC

As a part of International Yoga Day, CII-GBC (Green Business Centre) along with CII-Telangana State Office, and Young Indians also organized a Yoga session by Heartfulness Institute. The session was marked by asanas and meditation.

Understanding the need to holistically improve our minds and bodies to evolve into better human beings, CII offices across the country enthusiastically participated in the International Day of Yoga celebrations. The glimpses of these celebrations can be seen on the online handles of CII.

Yoga day is about inculcating and integrating the ancient art of yoga in our daily lives. It maintains physical fitness; reduces stress; improves control on emotions and feelings; controls negative thoughts; creates a feeling of general well-being; improves mental clarity; enhances self-understanding; connects to nature and many more. Its benefits are countless.
