Infrastructure sector is the key driver for the Indian economy. The sector is highly responsible for propelling India’s overall development and enjoys intense focus from the Government for initiating policies that would ensure time-bound creation of world class infrastructure in the country.

The Government of India has given a mega push to the sector by announcing multiple new projects in areas such as roads, power, coal, civil aviation, railways, smart cities development, dams and waterways etc., which will generate new challenges and opportunities for the construction industry.

To boost the infrastructure sector further and provide a platform for companies to showcase their technology, India’s apex Industry body and premiere exhibition organiser Confederation of Indian Industry organized the 11th edition of Excon – Global Exhibition and Conferences on Construction Equipment & Technology from 17th to 21st May 2022 in Bengaluru.

Excon is a delivery vehicle of CII for the construction equipment and machinery sector which has been providing an excellent platform for both Indian and overseas companies in the construction equipment industry to display their technological advancements, innovation and latest developments in the sector.

The first edition of Excon was launched in the year 2000, at a time when the construction industry was at a preliminary stage. From the first edition, Excon has grown to become one of the top exhibitions in the world for this sector. Excon has retained the position of “South Asia’s Largest Event for Construction Equipment” for the last 6 editions.

The latest edition of Excon focussed on ‘Building India for a New World – Sustainability, Growth, Competitiveness and Technology’. The event laid special focus on Women in Infrastructure Awards. The show included a specialised pavilion on artificial intelligence, alternate fuels, finance, academia & startups. Seminars on AI, IoT & automation, Atmanirbhar Bharat, green construction, components and parts, defence and paramilitary, amongst others were also held.

EXCON 2021 featured featured 2,80,000 square meters of exhibition area. Over 800 national and international exhibitors participated from 11 countries, namely Czech Republic, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States of America.

Women in Construction

As a special initiative, Women Building India- Equal Opportunity Awards were given at the Inaugural Session of EXCON. The objective of the award was to recognize companies from the infrastructure sector that have taken proactive steps to enable women to participate in the workforce.

As part of this initiative, a panel discussion on “Women in Construction- Barriers, Solutions and Way Forward” was organised on 20th May 2022 at BIEC, Bengaluru. During the discussion, the panel deliberated on the topic and exchanged insights on how organizations such as Tata Hitachi, Volvo India, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Larsen and Toubro (L&T) can promote participation of women in the sector. The session also highlighted ideas that can help promote inclusion and play an important role in setting a vision for the industry.

Women champions from Cummins India Ltd, Volvo CE India Pvt. Ltd, Schwing Stetter India Pvt. Ltd, and L&T Constructions & Mining Machinery were recognized for their efforts.
